Visions "Big Daddy" pike rod

If there is one thing I know, and that is the staff at Vision do a lot of pike on the fly, and are damn good at it too. This was evident when they won the tournamnet I put on last year. Here is a proper fly fishing company that knows what is needed when developing a pike fly specific rod. Vision Big Daddy rods are great choice for casting the big, air resistant flies. Their powerful medium fast action is forgiving and pleasant when casting but they have brutal power for fighting the monster size pike.

As a four piece rods they are easy to pack when you’re traveling. These 9 foot rods are made for line weights #8 (recommended head weight 19g), #9 (recommended head weight 21g) and #10 (recommended head weight 23g). These rods are not recommended for conservative anglers because of their bold colour which comes in a kinda olive green with yellow trim. Vision have also developed "Big Daddy" lines for this 4 piece as well, but more on that tommorrow. My Baltic pike tours will have a couple of these for clients to test while out on my boat this coming season & I'm also seriously considering stocking this rod and their lines in my fly shop from the spring.

Out testing

One of the reasons I've been pining for the ice to melt is because I've been itching to get out and test the new Pikesaber which was sent to me towards the end of last year. It comes highly recommended & It's been approved by the Pike fly fishing association...So its got to be good!

Anyway since the ice started melting I've been out testing every day for a couple of hours in all manner of conditions with an array of different fly lines, reels and off course flies. I haven't caught anything on it yet but Pike are 2 weeks later with their spawning than last year. I'll be taking it down to Merikarvia next week for the teams to try out to get their opinions on it and whether I share similar views. I've started a review which will eventually be in PDF form as it will be too long to put on the blog. This rod deserves a proper testing and you the punters deserve a proper review.

So bare with me for another month or so and I'll have one ready for you.

Pikesaber Casting

Here's a video I found regarding the "Pikesaber" from Piketrek casting abilities. I've featured this rod a couple of times now and for good reason. Towards the end of last year I managed to get my grubby little mits on one of these rods and will be doing a full review on it in the coming months. All I want to say at the mo is that its a very tidy package indeed.

The Pike Saber

Here's something I came across the other day you lot might be interested. Its called the pike saber from Piketrek

They go on to say quote"

PIKESABER - 10 Weight 9'00" 4 Piece Specialist PIKE Fly Rod

The PIKESABER is the Pike Fly Rod that all others will be judged by. It has been specifically designed for the rigours of Pike Fly Fishing. It is made from the finest materials. From the bespoke and unique fighting butt, to the un-ground blank finish, everything has been thought of, and though about.

This rod has been designed by anglers for anglers, and this is evident in the look, the feel and the handling.

This pike fly rod is a delight to use. It is both light and strong and throws large pike flies with ease. The unground blank finish adds strength and the spiral wrap cuts down on friction on the line. It allows the line to slip through the rings without ‘sticking' to the rod. This is something we have yet to see in any of our competitors.

The unique aluminium fighting butt allows the pike fly fisherman to exert pressure on the fish, whilst keeping full control of the rod. This is something that pike fly rods have been criticised for in the past. A pike when played for too long can take a while to recover. With the PIKESABER the pike fly angler can control the pike without needlessly tiring it.

The extra stiffness of the unground blank allows the pike angler to punch out heavy pike flies with little effort. The turnover is superb, it forms tight loops on the cast and the rod feels very light at only 140 grams.

More on this in a couple of days
