Fly Candy

There are some great exponents of foam out there that utilise the material very well. Far better than I ever will. Most flies tied with foam are generally used for surface lures which is understandable. These gurglebugs which can be fished with a floating line are far better when fished with an intermediate line. A floating fly that can be dragged under the surface and fished a meter or even 2 meters has a very attractive action that any respecting predator cant resist.

I've been looking at ways of adding foam throughout a hook in ways that won't hinder me when tying on the other materials so as to be ablle to give me a fly that is light enough to cast and will be drawn under by an intermediate line, and I constantly keep on coming back to this design.

I do have some new and interesting templates which I've settled on and will try them out this coming season.....Until then I'll just keep on plugging away with these.

I started off with this gurglebug tube fly by tying a small chenille ball towards the back of the tube. Then added a decent length of white rabbit zonker. Then palmered on a dubbin brush loop of white raccoon fur and then followed that with some black. Pushed the loops tight up against the chenille ball so that it would flare out.

Added the foam head and added a splash of red marabou for under its chin..Jobs n good en!

Gurglebug divers

Have been tying a few surface lures over the last few days. All range in size between 100m - 200mm long and have varied some with weed guards and some rubber legs of the sides of them. One can use these as poppers but I like to fish them on an intermediate line letting the line sink a few seconds before I start my retrieval. Depending on how deep your fishing, the foam head, although having a plate at the back of the head allowing the bug to dive, it will start to float back to the surface giving the fly a wicked action through the water column,especially the eel/salamander bugs tied with Zonker strips. They might look like Bass flies but having to downsize the images hasn't done them much justice.
