Fly Candy - Musky madness

Back on the Musky war path with this 16" inche monstrocity. The tandem stinger tail is a combination of Black and brown schlappen, Tan bucktail and 3 extra long brown microbarb saddles. With the main body I used black and brown chinese cock hackles, tan bucktail, several shorter brown and tan microbarb saddles and 5 long strands of wide gold hologtaphic tinsel. Gave it a decent colar of Elk hair then finished it off with a large spun deer hair head.

For all you detractors out there, especially musky fly fisherman that think these kind of flies are just too over the top to catch fish, then here's a great short video from Thomas Guyard from "Fish addict team" blog based out in Quebec with a superb 40" musky using a fly based on this double tandem rig system which can be seen directly after this video on his blog. Whats even more impressive is that this is his first full year fly fishing for Musky. Awesome Thomas, really chuffed for you mate!

  3. Every big fish generally gets the blood flowing Thomas. Isn't it amazing that the fight is over all to quickly, but the greatest joy though is watching the big old girl return to the depths. That's generally what sticks in the mind for all eternity.

Let me tell you men. These flys can be casted 25m. I used a T3 orvis 10 wt rod 9also an 11 and a 12), 350 to 400 grain teeney ...they cast like a dream. I have been throwing at these muskies for almost 20 years and I have never had a better fly to toss ! Up to Canada three trips this summer. I had more fish follow and strike than any year previous. I saw over 60 fish, no shit. Two were over 50"...biggest caught was 45". Big fish want to eat BIG flys. These are undoulbtably the best tied and most inovated in the world. Thank You Si.

  5. Do you used a floating or sinking line when do you fishing musky

  6. Line choice is all dependant on the seasons for me thomas. I probably use a floating more than an intermediate over the course of a season due to the amount of wading I do. Even when I'm on a boat fishing in depths of 3 - 5m I use a floating line but use a much longer leader of around 6 - 8ft of 50lb mono with a weighted fly and I'm still able to get fish at depths of 3 meters quite easy.

  7. ok, but do you can cast a very big fly with a leader of 8 feets ?
I order an outbound short (Rio) in W9I-6S for do swim my fly in 6 at 8feets, for research the big musky in the depth water, what do you think ?

The way to fish these flys is with a sinking line...that is if you have a boat. The idea is to pop the fly two or three times to bring attention. Then strip to bring the fly down in front of the monster's face. A 6 foot leader is plenty. Longer if you want more pops and less dive. Teeney line 300 to 400 grain is what I have found to be unbeatable. Hope this helps.
